A TRAVERS LE MIROIR Une jeune femme schizophrène a des visions, convaincue que la présence de Dieu se rapproche sans cesse. Cependant, à mesure que sa descente dans la folie s’accentue, elle devient le point focal des émotions de trois hommes. En remettant en question les notions traditionnelles de Dieu, le film primé aux Oscars de Bergman est un portrait dévastateur et éprouvant du malaise et de la paranoïa grandissante de la vie contemporaine.

LES COMMUNIANTS Un pêcheur sensible et désabusé est encouragé par sa femme à chercher du réconfort auprès de son pasteur local. Cependant, le pasteur lutte lui-même pour retrouver la foi. Le désir de Bergman de définir la relation de l’homme à Dieu s’exprime magnifiquement dans ce film, porté par des performances remarquables et une photographie sublime de Sven Nykvist, collaborateur privilégié du réalisateur.

LE SILENCE L’intimité de deux sœurs menace de les détruire mentalement et physiquement. En voyage dans une ville étrangère au bord de la guerre et dont elles ne comprennent pas la langue, le décor devient une métaphore de la relation tendue entre les deux femmes. C’est une vision bouleversante de l’isolement émotionnel et du désespoir dans un vide spirituel oppressant.

WINTER LIGHT A susceptible and disillusioned fisherman is urged by his wife to seek solace from his local priest. However, the priest is struggling to regain his own belief. Bergman’s desire to define man’s relationship to God is beautifully played out in the film with stunning character performances and cinematography from the director’s favoured collaborator Sven Nykvist.

THE SILENCE The intimacy of two sisters threatens to destroy them both mentally and physically. Travelling to a foreign city on the brink of war and whose language they do not understand, the setting becomes a metaphor for the strained relationship between the women. This is a shattering vision of emotional isolation and despair in a claustrophobic spiritual void.
